This camping with kids checklist is built for one kind of trip: car camping with little kids, where the truck parks next to the tent and you can pack a little heavier. Backpacking with a four year old is a different sport. A state park weekend with the car ten steps away is where most families start, and it is where a good list matters most, because the thing you forgot is the thing a toddler needs at 0200.
The list works on three rules: cover the basics, leave home what you will not use, and keep the important stuff easy to reach.
The Quick Camping With Kids Checklist
If you only read one part of this page, read this.
- Shelter and sleep: tent with rainfly, sleeping pads or an air bed, sleeping bags rated for the night's low, pajamas, one familiar pillow or blanket per kid.
- Light: one headlamp per person old enough to wear one, plus a lantern for the tent.

Size up. A tent's person rating assumes sleepers packed shoulder to shoulder, not bags, a pack and play, and a kid who sleeps sideways. The Coleman Sundome 4 Person Tent is a common first family tent: a 9 x 7 foot freestanding dome with a rainfly, a setup Coleman lists at about 10 minutes, and a floor that one queen air bed fills. Pads and bags. The ground pulls heat out of a body all night, so a pad or air bed under each sleeper matters as much as the bag on top. Check the forecast low, then pack for a little colder than that.
Routine. Bring the bedtime routine from home: pajamas, teeth, the same book, the same stuffed animal. Little kids sleep better when the night feels familiar, even if the bedroom is nylon.

This is the one piece of camp kitchen gear I have a real opinion on, because I own two. My YETI Tundra 45 review covers the story: the cooler sat in my truck at the trailhead during a four-day Maroon Bells backpacking trip and still had ice in it when we came back. That was Colorado, which the review points out is kinder than a Texas parking lot, so your mileage depends on the weather and how often the lid opens. The included basket hangs up top and keeps food cold but dry, out of the ice melt. My one gripe from the review: the lid will not stay open by itself, so load it with that in mind. It is a premium cooler, and in the review I say plainly that if yours only leaves the garage twice a year, a cheaper one is fine.

Bring more drinking water than you need. The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter is a good backup on a day by the lake, but it is a drink-through straw with no claim for viruses or chemicals, and it will not fill a pot, so plan your main supply from home or the campground spigot.

mine, and I have had this exact stool for easily over fifteen years of camping trips and truck duty. Fire Safety With Little Kids
Campfire time is the best part of the night and the part that needs the clearest rules. Smokey Bear's campfire guidance covers the basics: use the campground's fire ring, keep the fire at least 15 feet from tents, keep water, a bucket, and a shovel close, and keep an eye on children and pets. Set a line kids do not cross, and put their chairs behind it.
A barrier helps at home too. My Solo Stove Yukon lives in the backyard, not at a campsite, and the review explains that we used it once as a family without the Surround guard. I was on edge the whole time watching the boys, and that one night made the guard worth the money. At a campground fire ring there is no guard, so the chair line is your barrier.
When you are done, drown, stir, drown again, and feel. If the ashes are too hot to touch, the fire is too hot to leave.

if the campground has a lake. I fished a lot when I was stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay, and now I take my boys. This one is a real rod with a grip designed for smaller hands. A spinning reel takes some teaching, so a very young kid may do better with a push-button spincast first.

What age is good for a first camping trip with kids?
There is no magic number. The age matters less than the plan. Start with one night close to home, at a campground with bathrooms, so an early exit is easy if it goes sideways.
How do you keep little kids warm camping at night?
Insulation under them matters as much as the bag on top, so use a pad or air bed. Dress them in dry layers for sleep, never the clothes they played in all day, and add a hat if the low is chilly. Skip the heater in the tent; warm bags and layers do that job without the carbon monoxide risk.
