Verdict up front: the best EDC for dads is the shortest list you can live with. Not the coolest, not the newest. The shortest. Everything below has survived years of my actual life as a Marine turned gym owner turned dad, and every item links to a full review where I get into the details. The Rules
My whole carry philosophy fits in four lines.
- Every piece earns its spot. If I stop reaching for it, it leaves the rotation.
- Buy the real one once. Cheap gear gets replaced. Good gear gets inherited.
- Solve the problem, then stop thinking about it. I find the one thing that works and never revisit the decision. That is the entire trick.
- Carry what matters. Some days that means titanium. Some days it means fruit snacks.
0515: The Pockets
The day starts at the dresser, and two things come off it every single morning.
The Ridge Wallet has been my wallet for ten years, and it was the first wallet I ever bought myself. Black on black, worn in all the right places, holding the six to eight cards a grown man actually needs. Full honesty: most days it rides in a Rogue fanny pack I love too much not to review eventually, because dad pockets belong to snacks and hot wheels half the time anyway. But it starts every morning in the same spot.
The Fisher Space Pen Bullet has been with me since 2008. It rode every deployment in my pocket while I led a signals intelligence support team, and it wears a dent and a scratch I call the resume. My kid will inherit this pen. It earned the easiest five stars I have ever given on this site, and I bought a second one for desk duty so the original never leaves my pocket. If you fix only one thing about your carry this year, fix the pen.
0700: The Desk
Coffee, then work, and I stand for most of it because sitting is what my low back likes least. I am a disabled vet with a back on a surgery shortlist, and the UPLIFT V3 genuinely changed my life. 0900: The Bag
In 2020, with our first kid on the way, I went shopping for a diaper bag and found nothing a dad would want to be seen holding. So I bought the NOMATIC 20L and built my own. Six years later it is still my gym bag, my carry-on, and my daily hauler, and it has hauled gym gear and diapers in the same trip more times than I can count. 1630: The Truck

Behind the seat rides the Walkstool Comfort in the 18-inch size. It packs down to a bundle about the length of my forearm and unfolds into a real seat, which matters when the sideline has no bleachers and my back has opinions. Coaching taught me a simple truth: the guy with a seat outlasts the guy standing next to him.
In the bed sits a YETI Tundra 45. I own two, a white one and an Alpine Yellow one that matches my gym's colors. I am a brand nerd and I have made peace with that, and rule two cuts both ways: when you buy the real one once and it works, sometimes you buy it twice. One of them kept ice for four days at the Maroon Bells trailhead, which settled every cooler debate I will ever be invited into.
By late afternoon the truck becomes the sideline kit. The stool unfolds, the cooler lands on the tailgate, and I get to watch my kid play from an actual seat instead of a camp crouch.
2100: The Dopp Kit
After bedtime stories the house goes quiet, and that is when I shave. The Supply Single Edge is a solid piece of metal with one blade, loaded injector style, and it has given me years of daily service on dollar blades. I bought it because cartridge razors are a subscription wearing a razor costume, and I refuse to subscribe to a problem that was solved before I was born. It solved shaving for me completely, which is the highest compliment I can give a razor. I have not thought about razors since, and that is rule three working exactly as intended.
