What Stands Out

  • Shows up as a plain camera source to Zoom, Teams, OBS and Discord, so the call software sees it like any webcam
  • 20 g and no power brick, which is rare for anything that touches HDMI
  • The included 30 cm extension keeps it from blocking the ports next to it on a crowded desk
  • Handles 4K30, 1080p60 and everything down to 480p60 off one HDMI input
  • Nothing to charge and nothing to mount, it lives behind the monitor

What To Check

  • The camera has to put out clean HDMI with unlimited runtime, and plenty of older consumer cameras do not, so check Elgato's compatibility list for the exact model before buying
  • 4K60 comes in as MJPG only, which is a compressed path, so 4K30 or 1080p60 is the steadier choice for long recordings
  • Elgato's Mac and iPad requirements list the free Camera Hub app as part of the setup, so Apple machines need that download

Cam Link 4K is a capture stick, not a camera. HDMI goes in one end, USB 3.0 goes in the other, and the computer sees whatever camera you plugged in as an ordinary webcam. It is one of Amazon's better selling products in the webcam category and carries the Amazon's Choice badge there, which is a little funny for a device with no lens.

For a dad who already owns a decent camera, this is the cheapest jump in picture quality available. The camera that shoots the kids' birthdays becomes the camera on the Monday call.

The Numbers That Matter

Clean HDMI in. This is the spec that decides everything and it belongs to your camera, not to this dongle. The camera has to send a clean signal with no menu overlays and it has to keep sending it without shutting off after half an hour. Elgato publishes a compatibility checker for exactly this reason.

4K30 and 1080p60. Both are solid. 4K60 is listed but arrives as MJPG only, which is a compressed path, so for a long recording the steadier picks are 4K30 for detail or 1080p60 for motion.

USB 3.0. Not USB 2.0. The port matters as much as the cable, and the included 30 cm extension keeps the stick from crowding out whatever is next to it.

20 grams. No power supply, no fan, no charging. It hides behind a monitor and gets forgotten, which is the point.

SpecWhat it decides
Clean HDMI requirementWhether your camera works at all
4K30 / 1080p60Detail or smooth motion, pick one
USB 3.0Which port on the machine it can use
20 g, no power brickWhere it lives on the desk

There is no subscription and no account. On Windows it is treated as a standard USB capture device. Elgato's own Mac and iPad requirements list its free Camera Hub app, so plan on installing that software on Apple hardware.

Who It Is For

The dad with a camera in a bag in the closet that deserves more use. If there is no camera in the house, start with a webcam instead: the Anker PowerConf C200 for calls, or the EMEET SmartCam C960 4K for detail and a tripod thread. Sound and light move the needle more than resolution does, so the FIFINE AmpliGame AM8T and the NEEWER RL-18 ring light are worth as much attention as the camera. If the footage is going somewhere afterward, the SanDisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD is where it lands.

The Short Version

The upgrade path that does not require buying another webcam. If there is already a camera in the house for kid photos and fishing trips, this dongle makes it the camera on calls and recordings. The whole decision comes down to one question: does your camera put out clean HDMI for as long as you need it. Check that first, then buy.
