What Stands Out

  • Four filtration layers: a spiral plate, a cross plate and two fine mesh screens, which is what keeps sludge out of the cup
  • No plastic touches the coffee; the contact surfaces are 304 stainless and food-grade silicone
  • Borosilicate glass rated to 360F thermal shock, so boiling water straight in is fine
  • 34 oz makes about three mugs, which is the right size for two people
  • Disassembles completely for cleaning
  • Works for cold brew and loose leaf tea as well as coffee

What To Check

  • Glass carafe: it will break eventually, and usually in the sink
  • No insulation, so coffee goes cold in about twenty minutes
  • Four filter layers means four things to rinse
  • French press coffee always has some sediment; four layers reduces it, not eliminates it

What This Is

A French press that takes the two common complaints seriously: grit in the cup and plastic in the brew path.

Why Four Filter Layers

A standard single-mesh press lets fines through, which is the muddy last inch everybody pours away. Stacking a spiral plate, a cross plate and two mesh screens catches most of that. It also means a slightly harder plunge, which is the tradeoff.

Technique Beats Equipment Here

Coarse grind, water just off the boil, four minutes, and plunge slowly. A cheap press used properly beats an expensive one used badly, and most bad French press coffee is a grind problem rather than a press problem. Which is the argument for spending on the grinder first.

It Will Break

Glass carafes break. Buy it knowing a replacement carafe exists, and do not put it in a backpack.

The Short Version

Four filter layers really does cut the sludge. It is glass, so it will break eventually, and your grind matters more than the press does.
