What Stands Out

  • Burr grinding rather than blade chopping, which is the single biggest upgrade available to home coffee
  • Eighteen settings from ultra-fine to extra-coarse, covering espresso through French press
  • 8 oz hopper and a chamber that holds enough ground coffee for 4 to 18 cups
  • Hopper and chamber both fully removable, so it can actually be cleaned
  • Electric timer with automatic shutoff, so you set the quantity once
  • Cord storage and an included scoop and cleaning brush

What To Check

  • Burr grinders retain grounds between uses; expect a little staleness unless you brush it out
  • Noticeably louder than a blade grinder, which matters at 5am
  • The finest settings are workable rather than espresso-grade
  • Static makes fine grinds cling to the chamber

What This Is

The upgrade that changes your coffee more than a new coffee maker will.

Burr Versus Blade, Plainly

A blade grinder is a propeller. It smashes beans into a mix of dust and chunks, and the dust over-extracts bitter while the chunks under-extract sour, in the same cup. A burr grinder crushes beans between two surfaces at a set distance, so the grounds come out the same size and the extraction is even.

If you buy good beans and grind them with a blade, you are throwing most of the money away. This is the fix.

Clean It Or It Lies To You

Coffee oils go rancid. A burr grinder with removable parts is one you will actually brush out every few weeks, and that is why removable parts are on the pros list rather than treated as a given.

The Short Version

Buy the grinder before the fancy coffee maker. Burr instead of blade is the biggest single upgrade home coffee has.
