What This Is
Fake fire, which for a Halloween yard is better than the real thing on every axis that matters.
Why Not Actual Flame
Because trick-or-treat night is children in flowing costumes moving fast in the dark near your walkway. Real torches, luminaries and candles on a path are a genuinely bad idea on the one night of the year with the most unpredictable foot traffic. These give you the same warm moving light with none of that.
Where They Work Best
Flanking a gate, a driveway entrance or the base of a porch step, in pairs. The flicker reads convincingly at fifteen or twenty feet and less so close up, so put them at the edges of the display rather than where people stand.
Charge is the whole game: they need direct afternoon sun. A torch on the north side of the house in late October will be dim by eight o'clock.
The Short Version
Fake flame beats real flame on a night full of kids in costumes. Pair them at entrances, and give them real afternoon sun.
