The FosPower Model A1 is a pocket-size emergency radio with AM, FM and the NOAA weather band, plus a flashlight, a reading light and a USB port. It is one of Amazon's top sellers in Weather Radios, and it can be powered four different ways.
It is built for the stretch when the power is out and cell service is shaky. Local AM and FM stations and the NOAA weather band tell you what is coming and when it is clear, without draining the phone you need for calls.
The Numbers That Matter
Four power sources. The built-in battery charges over USB, the solar panel trickles in power on a sunny sill, the hand crank works any time, and plain AAA batteries are the backup when everything else is low. That last one matters, because most houses already have AAAs in a drawer.
7400mWh battery. FosPower rates the battery at 7400mWh, and some retailers list a lower figure. It can top off a phone in a pinch. Treat it as a way to get a phone back to a usable charge, not a full power bank.
NOAA weather band. It tunes the seven NOAA frequencies so you can hear forecasts and warnings from the National Weather Service. FosPower does not list an automatic alert mode, so plan on it helping only when it is turned on. If you want a radio that sounds on its own for a warning, look at the Midland ER310.

Care and use. Follow the charging and battery instructions in the FosPower manual. Pull AAA batteries out if the radio will sit unused for a long stretch so they cannot leak, keep it out of standing water since it is only splash resistant, and store it somewhere it will not bake, like a dashboard in July.
