Let me be upfront: pre-workout is the most carnival-barker category in the entire supplement industry. Neon tubs, names that sound like classified weapons programs, ingredient panels that read like a dare. Most of them are a caffeine bomb plus a tingle additive so you feel like something is happening. Then mid-morning arrives and you crater at your desk like a man who has been awake since 1987.

I train at 5 AM in my garage because it is the only hour nobody in my house needs anything from me. Here is what that hour actually requires from a pre-workout: enough push to make heavy squats happen before sunrise, and a clean enough exit that I am still a functional employee, business owner, and father for the twelve hours after. That second half is where most products fail, and it is where this one earns its $55.

What's in the tub

Thorne's Advanced Pre-Workout is built on naturally derived caffeine, amino acids, and alpha-GPC. The formula is designed to support energy, focus, blood flow, and pump, and to delay time-to-fatigue so the work you put in actually goes somewhere.* No tingle circus. The first week I honestly wondered if it was working, because other products had trained me to believe that face static equals effectiveness. It does not. What I noticed instead: I stopped staring at the bar between sets, and the energy tapered off like a dimmer switch instead of a trapdoor.

It is also NSF Certified for Sport, meaning a third party tested it for label accuracy and screened it against banned substances. In a category this shady, that is not a nice-to-have. That is the whole reason I will put my name near it.

The flavor is Rainbow Sherbet. I was skeptical. It tastes like the push-pops from the ice cream truck, which at 4:55 AM is either delightful or disorienting depending on how awake you are.

The math

$55 a tub. Depending on how many mornings a week you train, that shakes out to a couple bucks per session. That's about what the gas-station energy drink costs, minus the mystery ingredients and the 2 PM crash. I do not count coffee against it, because coffee still happens. Coffee is non-negotiable.

If you train in the evening, read this twice

This contains real caffeine. Take it at 6 PM and you will sabotage the exact sleep everything else on this site is trying to fix. A great session followed by a 1 AM ceiling-staring contest is a net loss. Evening trainers: skip it, or go caffeine-free.

Who should skip this

More guys than the industry wants to admit. If you are not already sleeping, eating enough protein, and covering the boring foundations, a pre-workout is a spoiler on a minivan. Go read the Dad Stack first, and notice pre-workout is not in the core stack. It is a nice-to-have after the foundations, not a substitute for any of them. Skip it too if caffeine hits you hard, if the budget is tight, or if your only window is at night, per above. Black coffee and a good playlist carried me through years of training.

For the 5 AM crew, though: this is the rare one that does its job and then gets out of the way.

The Bottom Line

Amino acids, alpha-GPC, and naturally derived caffeine, NSF Certified for Sport. A nice-to-have after the foundations, never before them.
