What Stands Out

  • 2TB for the price of a mid-range SSD at a quarter the capacity, which is the whole argument for spinning disks
  • No software or setup: connect it and the computer recognises it
  • Works with Windows or Mac out of the box
  • USB 3.0 with an 18 inch cable included
  • The number one best seller in portable drives, which in storage means proven rather than novel

What To Check

  • A mechanical drive: drop it while it is spinning and the data is at risk
  • Far slower than an SSD, which you feel on big transfers
  • Not a backup strategy by itself; one drive in one house is one flood away from nothing
  • Mac users may need to reformat depending on how they intend to use it

What This Is

The cheap, large, boring drive that most people should own. Two terabytes is enough for every photo and video a family has taken, with room left over.

Spinning Disk Versus SSD

An SSD is faster and tougher and costs several times as much per terabyte. For backup, where the drive sits on a desk and runs once a week, speed is not the point and capacity is. For a drive that rides in a bag, buy the SSD.

One Honest Warning About Backup

A single external drive is not a backup plan. It is one copy, in one building, subject to the same fire, flood and theft as the computer it backs up. Treat this as the local copy and put something off-site or in the cloud as the second. Photos of your kids are not recoverable at any price.

The Short Version

The sensible local backup drive: cheap per terabyte and proven. Pair it with something off-site, because one copy in one house is not a backup.
