What Stands Out

  • Up to 150MB/s read, roughly fifteen times a standard USB 2.0 drive
  • Metal casing rather than plastic, which matters for something living on a keyring
  • 128-bit AES password protection through SanDisk SecureAccess
  • A full-length movie transfers in under 30 seconds per SanDisk's own testing
  • A long-running model, which in flash storage means the failure modes are known

What To Check

  • USB-A only: a modern laptop needs an adapter
  • No cap, and the connector is exposed in a pocket
  • Write speeds are not published, only read speeds, which is the usual flash drive sleight of hand
  • Password software is a download on Mac

What This Is

The flash drive that has been the default recommendation for years. Metal body, respectable speed, and encryption software for the files you would rather not lose with the drive.

Read The Speed Claim Carefully

Flash drives advertise read speed because it is the flattering number. Write speed, which is what you wait on when copying files onto the drive, is usually far lower and usually unpublished. Expect the transfer onto the stick to take noticeably longer than the transfer off it.

The USB-A Problem

Most laptops sold now have no USB-A port. If yours is one of them, the dual connector drives in this shelf solve that without an adapter hanging off the side.

The Short Version

The reliable default, with the usual flash drive caveat: the headline speed is read speed, and writing to it is slower.
