Capacity2TB
InterfacePCIe 4.0 NVMe, M.2 2280
ReadUp to 7,450 MB/s
WriteUp to 6,900 MB/s
Random performance55%+ over the 980 PRO
EfficiencyUp to 50% better per watt than 980 PRO

What Stands Out

  • Up to 7,450MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write, near the practical ceiling of PCIe 4.0
  • More than 55 percent better random performance than the 980 PRO, which is the figure that affects load times
  • Up to 50 percent better performance per watt than the previous generation, so it runs cooler in a laptop
  • M.2 2280, the standard size for desktops, laptops and the PlayStation 5 expansion slot
  • Samsung makes its own flash, which shows up in long-term reliability data

What To Check

  • An internal drive: this is a build or an upgrade, not something you plug in
  • PCIe 4.0 speeds need a PCIe 4.0 slot; on an older board it will run slower
  • Priced well above budget NVMe drives that feel identical in everyday use
  • A heatsink version exists and costs more; the PS5 generally wants one

What This Is

The fast internal drive for a gaming desktop, a video editing machine, or a PlayStation 5 that has filled up.

Where The Speed Actually Shows

Sequential numbers like 7,450MB/s sell drives and rarely change your day. The figure that does is random performance, up more than 55 percent over the previous generation, because that is what game levels and project files actually hit. Booting and launching feel quicker; copying one huge file does not feel very different from a cheaper drive.

Check Your Slot First

A PCIe 4.0 drive in a PCIe 3.0 slot works fine and runs at PCIe 3.0 speeds, which makes the premium pointless. Confirm the board or console supports it before paying for headroom you cannot use.

The Short Version

Genuinely fast and genuinely priced. Worth it in a PCIe 4.0 slot where the random speed shows; wasted money in an older machine.
