What Stands Out

  • UL rated 2-A:10-B:C covers wood and trash, flammable liquids and energized electrical gear
  • All-metal construction with a commercial-grade metal valve, trigger, pull pin and safety seal
  • Rechargeable by certified professionals after use instead of thrown away
  • Color-coded, corrosion-resistant pressure gauge you can read from across the garage
  • Chemical-resistant, waterproof instruction label that will not deteriorate over time

What To Check

  • At 17 in and 9.6 lb it needs a stud or a solid mount, not a pegboard hook
  • Dry chemical agent leaves a mess that has to be cleaned off tools and vehicles
  • A smaller unit is the usual pick for under a kitchen sink, so decide which room this one is for

The HOME2PRO is First Alert's bigger home extinguisher, and it is one of the top sellers in fire extinguishers on Amazon with an Amazon's Choice badge under the title. It is the red cylinder that belongs by the door a family actually runs out of.

A garage produces three different fires. Cardboard and sawdust. Gas cans, oil and charcoal starter. A shop vac or an extension cord that decides it has had enough. The 2-A:10-B:C rating means this one is rated for all three, which is the whole argument for buying the larger unit instead of the little kitchen can.

Safety and fit note. Dry chemical is a lung and eye irritant and it leaves a residue that has to be cleaned off tools and vehicles. Mount it on the exit side of the garage so you are never reaching past a fire to get it, walk the family through the pull, aim, squeeze label before you need it, and keep the pin seal intact so a curious kid cannot discharge it. Give the gauge a glance once a month.

The Numbers That Matter

2-A:10-B:C. The A number is ordinary combustibles, the B number is flammable liquids, and C means it is safe on energized electrical equipment. A unit without the C is the wrong tool for a workshop.

All-metal valve and pull pin. The valve is where cheap extinguishers fail, usually after sitting on a wall for a decade. Metal valve, metal trigger, metal pin.

9.6 lb and 17 in tall. Big enough to do real work, heavy enough that the mount matters. Put a screw into a stud.

Rechargeable. After a use, a certified shop can recharge it instead of you buying another one. That also means it can be serviced rather than quietly aging out.

Who It Is For

The dad with a garage that holds a grill, a mower, gas cans and a truck, and who would rather not find out what the little kitchen can does against a fuel fire. Put a smoke alarm on the ceiling in the same trip: the First Alert SMI100 battery smoke alarm covers the hallway, and the Kidde COB battery CO alarm covers the thing you cannot smell. If the garage is also where the storm kit lives, the Jackery Explorer 300 keeps phones and lights running when the power goes.

The Short Version

This is the heavier home and shop extinguisher, the one that hangs by the garage door where the grill, the truck and the workbench all live. The all-metal valve, the real gauge and the option to recharge it are what separate a keeper from the disposable plastic-valve units sitting next to it on the shelf.
