Where solar Christmas lights make sense
Anywhere you do not have an outlet: the far end of a fence, a mailbox, a tree at the edge of the lot, a garden bed across the yard. Running an extension cord to those places is the reason they usually go undecorated, and solar removes it entirely.
The honest limitation in December
Solar lights are specified on summer sun. In late December the days are short and the sun is low, so expect noticeably less runtime than the box suggests — often a few hours after dusk rather than all night. That is fine for the hours anyone is actually looking, and it is worth knowing before you expect them lit at 11pm.
Site the panel where it gets afternoon sun, even if that means separating it from the prettiest spot for the bulbs.
What C9 means
It is a bulb size — the big, traditional Christmas bulb shape, as opposed to the small mini lights. C9 reads as classic and nostalgic from the street. The diamond facet on these adds sparkle that a smooth bulb does not have.
Who should skip it
If you have an outlet within reach, a plug-in set will be brighter, run all night and last more seasons. Solar is for the places power will not reach.
The Short Version
For the fence line or tree with no outlet near it. Expect shorter December runtime than the spec, and put the panel where the sun is.
