What Stands Out

  • Boar hair rather than synthetic, which is softer and lifts dirt with less pressure
  • Metal-free handles, so there is nothing to score paint or piano black trim if you slip
  • Safe on leather, screens and gloss trim, which is where synthetic brushes leave marks
  • Two inch bristles, slim enough for lug nuts, vents, cup holders and seat rails
  • Holds up to degreasers and all-purpose cleaners, and boar hair softens when wet into a real lather
  • Water-resistant handles that will not rust or warp

What To Check

  • Three brushes is a starter set; a full detailing kit runs to a dozen
  • Natural bristle sheds a little at first
  • Needs rinsing and drying bristle-down or the ferrule stays wet
  • Boar hair is softer than you want for stubborn wheel grime

What This Is

The brushes that do not leave marks. Detailing brushes are a category where the cheap ones cost you money, because the metal ferrule on a hardware-store brush will put a scratch in gloss black trim the first time your hand slips.

Boar Hair Versus Synthetic

Synthetic bristles are stiffer and cheaper and fine on a wheel. On an interior, stiff bristles plus pressure is how you put fine scratches into a glossy console or an infotainment screen. Boar hair is soft, holds more product, and lathers when wet so you need less pressure to begin with.

Dry Them Properly

Rinse, shake, and stand them bristle-down. Standing a wet natural-bristle brush upright runs water into the ferrule, which rots the binding and the brush starts shedding into whatever you are cleaning.

The Short Version

Soft boar hair and no metal anywhere near your trim. Dry them bristle-down or the ferrule rots and they start shedding.
