What Stands Out
What To Check
The myQ Smart Garage Control is a small hub you mount on the garage ceiling and a sensor you stick on the door. It carries Amazon's Choice in its category, and it is one of the more commonly bought smart home devices on the site, mostly because it fixes one specific and very annoying problem.
The problem is the door that stayed open. You are halfway to the field, somebody says they think it is up, and now the kids' bikes and your plates are sitting behind an open door. This closes it from the phone, and it will close it on a schedule if nobody remembers at all.
The Numbers That Matter
50 feet to the router. The hub needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi within that distance. In an attached garage this is nothing. In a detached garage across the driveway, this is the whole project, and you are shopping for an access point before you shop for this.
After 1993, with conditions. Most openers newer than that work, but the exclusions are real: certain photo-eye sensors, Chamberlain Group openers with a yellow learn button built between 2010 and 2021, and every Linear opener. Read the learn button color off your opener before you order.
Three guests. myQ Guest invites up to three other people to control the door. Enough for a spouse and a grandparent, not enough for a whole extended family.
| Spec | What it decides |
|---|---|
| Post-1993 openers, with exclusions | Whether it works on your door at all |
| 2.4 GHz within 50 ft | Whether a detached garage is a problem |
| Ceiling mount, 0.8 x 2.6 x 2.6 in | How the install goes on a Saturday |
| Close schedule | Whether the door is ever open overnight again |
| Three myQ Guest invites | Who else can open it |
Who It Is For
The dad whose garage is also the gym, the workshop and the place the bikes live. Open, close, status and notifications run on the free myQ app. Amazon Key In-Garage Delivery is called out as a Prime member benefit, so that piece depends on a Prime membership, and myQ has historically put some third-party integrations behind paid tiers, so treat the app account as part of the deal.
Inside the house, the Tapo C100 covers a room and keeps its recordings on a card you own, and the Amazon Smart Plug handles the lamp and the fan. If the garage is where the standing desk and the training gear already live, this is the piece that locks the room up behind you.

The Short Version
The single most useful smart home thing a dad with a truck and a garage gym can install in an afternoon. You get to the end of the driveway, realize nobody hit the button, and close it from your phone. Check your opener against the exclusion list first, because that is where this one goes wrong.
