What Stands Out

  • 29 inches of vertical drop, which takes an above-fireplace TV down to eye level
  • Stop-anywhere tension design rather than fixed detents
  • 40 degrees of swivel each way, so the picture can follow you to the kitchen
  • Sits 3 inches from the wall when stowed, so it still looks mounted
  • Rated for 50 to 86 inch sets up to 90 lbs

What To Check

  • Must be mounted into solid structure, and a masonry fireplace means masonry anchors
  • Heat above a working fireplace is a real constraint the mount does not solve
  • Cable management has to accommodate 29 inches of travel or it will snag
  • Costs several times what a fixed mount does

What This Is

An articulating mount that lets a television above a fireplace be pulled down and out to normal seated viewing height, then pushed back flat when it is not in use.

The Problem It Solves

Televisions above fireplaces are mounted where the wall is, not where your eyes are. The result is a permanent upward neck angle, and on most panels a washed-out picture as well, because LCD contrast falls off sharply when you view it from below. People live with it for years. A pull-down mount removes the compromise entirely without giving up the wall position.

Check The Wall First

This is the step that matters. The mount has to carry a television plus leverage at full extension, and that load has to land in structure. A wood- framed wall needs the right studs; a masonry or stone chimney breast needs masonry anchors rated for the job and a drill to match. Work out which you have before ordering, because it changes the hardware and possibly who does the install.

Heat Is A Separate Problem

A mount can lower the television away from the heat when you are watching, but the stowed position is still above a fireplace. If yours is a working wood or gas fireplace, measure the temperature at the mounting height during a real fire. Sustained heat shortens panel life, and a mantel that deflects heat forward is worth having regardless of the mount.

Leave Slack In The Cables

Twenty-nine inches of travel means every cable needs that much slack, routed so it cannot catch as the arm moves. Do this properly at install; a cable that snags at full extension pulls on ports that are expensive to repair.

The Short Version

The specific fix for the most common bad TV placement in American houses. Verify what the wall is made of and how hot it gets before buying.
