What Stands Out

  • 21 grams and 8.5 mm thick, so it disappears on the wrist under a sleeve or a glove
  • Casio rates the CR2016 battery at about seven years, so it is close to a set-and-forget watch
  • Split-time stopwatch is genuinely useful for timing rest periods, intervals and a brisket stall
  • Resin case, bezel, band and glass, which keeps the whole watch light and cheap to replace
  • The number one selling men's wrist watch on Amazon, so it is a safe pick for a first honest watch

What To Check

  • Casio lists this one as Water Resistant with no meter rating, so confirm what that covers before wearing it in the lake
  • The Amazon listing sits under a group of F91W colorways, so confirm the black F-91W-1X is the one in the cart
  • Resin glass scuffs more easily than mineral glass

The Casio F91W-1 is the small black rectangle that has been on wrists for decades, and it is currently the number one selling men's wrist watch on Amazon. The case is all resin, the display is plain, and the whole thing weighs 21 grams.

The case measures 8.5 mm thick, so it slides under a jacket cuff without fighting the sleeve. For a strength coach it works as a usable stopwatch with split timing for rest periods and sprints, and it is cheap enough that a scuffed crystal after a day in the yard is not worth a second thought.

Fit and water note. Casio lists this model only as Water Resistant with no meter rating, so treat it as splash and rain only, not a swimming or fishing-in-the-water watch. The 145 to 200 mm band range covers most adults but will be loose on a young kid's wrist.

The Numbers That Matter

SpecWhat it decides
21 g / 8.5 mm thickWhether you notice it during a lift or under a sleeve
About 7 years on CR2016How long before you think about it again
1/100 sec stopwatch, split timeWhether it times sets, sprints and intervals
145 to 200 mm bandWho in the house it actually fits

The weight. At 21 grams this is one of the lightest watches Casio sells, because the case, bezel, band and glass are all resin. Nothing metal means nothing cold, nothing to pinch and nothing to scratch a barbell.

The battery. Casio publishes an estimate of about seven years on a CR2016. Set it once and the next thing you do to it is probably a battery swap.

The stopwatch. Split time and first and second place times sound like track meet features, and that is exactly where they came from. They work just as well for a rest clock between sets.

Who It Is For

The dad who wants one honest watch, no charger, no app and no subscription attached to it. If you want the same idea with a steel bracelet, see the Casio A158WA-1, or the Casio A168WA-1 for a steel bracelet with a full-face backlight. If you need a countdown timer for intervals, the Casio AE1200WH sets one to the second, and for a rated 100 meter resin digital, look at the Casio W800H.

The Short Version

The F91W is the watch a dad puts on when he does not want to think about a watch. It weighs almost nothing, it times a rest period, and a scratched crystal after a day of yard work is not a problem. If you want a steel bracelet instead of resin, look at the Casio A158WA-1.
