I have carried a pocket knife every single day since I was about fourteen years old. I have owned cheap gas station knives, mid-range Kershaws, and a couple of higher-end pieces that mostly sat in a drawer because they were too heavy or too pretty to actually use. The Benchmade Bugout 535 is the first knife that solved every problem I had with the ones before it.

At 1.85 ounces, this thing genuinely disappears in your pocket. I mean that literally. I have patted my pocket in a mild panic thinking I left it somewhere, only to realize it was clipped right where it always is. It is so light that it does not pull your shorts down, does not create a weird bulge that makes people at the playground give you sideways looks, and does not annoy you when you sit down. For a dad who already has a phone, keys, and wallet competing for pocket real estate, that weight savings matters more than you think.

The CPM-S30V steel holds an edge like a champ. I have used this knife to break down Amazon boxes (approximately nine thousand of them since becoming a parent), cut rope, slice apples for snack time, open blister packs that were clearly designed by someone who hates consumers, and whittle a stick with my son at the campsite. I sharpen it maybe once every couple of months with a quick strop and it is right back to shaving sharp.

The AXIS lock is the feature that makes this a true dad knife. You can deploy and close it with one hand, which matters when your other hand is holding a bag of groceries, a toddler, or both. Flick it open with your thumb, squeeze the lock to close. Simple, reliable, and it has never accidentally opened in my pocket. Not once.

At $210, it is not cheap. I will not pretend otherwise. But Benchmade offers their LifeSharp service where they will sharpen, adjust, and tune your knife for free, forever. This is a buy-it-once situation. I have been carrying mine daily for over a year and it still looks and functions like it did out of the box, minus some honest wear on the scales that just gives it character.

If you carry one tool every day, make it a good one. This is the one.

The Bottom Line

The lightest, most practical everyday knife a dad can own. Buy it once, carry it forever.
